Bansko Municipality plans to construct an airport for small aircraft, enhancing tourist access and improving safety at the resort. The project will feature an 800-meter runway and a heliport, serving both fast visitor transport and emergency response needs.
City of Bansko: Bansko lies at the foot of the Pirin Mountains, not far from the national park of the same name, in the valley of the Nestos River at an elevation of 925 meters above sea level. It is a ski resort. The city is about 160 km from Sofia and about 220 km from Thessaloniki.
Local officials and tourism experts anticipate that this development will boost the resort’s appeal, positioning it as one of the top winter destinations worldwide.
Discussions about the airport’s construction have recently resumed during a public consultation at Bansko’s Tourist Information Center. The municipality’s plan focuses not only on boosting tourism but also on establishing critical infrastructure for emergency medical services, firefighting, and humanitarian operations.
“This project aligns with our vision for enhanced connectivity, economic growth, and a better quality of life for all residents,” said Deputy Mayor Eng. Georgi Donevichin.
The tourism sector in Bansko views the project as a key factor in boosting the resort’s appeal.
Malin Bystrin, President of the Bansko Tourism Business Union, expresses optimism about the positive impact of this new investment.
“Tourism needs this development, and we will be delighted if the project comes to fruition,” Bystrin told Economic.bg.
Beyond Bansko, the airport is expected to benefit the entire region, strengthening its appeal and accessibility.
Local authorities have set an ambitious goal of establishing the resort among the world’s leading winter destinations.
