Wizz Air will launch a direct flight between Budapest and Mumbai later this year, operating daily, and a connection between the Hungarian and Indian capitals may follow soon, announced Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Péter Szijjártó in New Delhi.
According to a statement from the ministry sent to MTI on Tuesday, the minister shared after discussions with several Indian government ministers that the importance of relations between the two countries and their highly positive economic impact on Hungary are not emphasized enough.
He explained that while bilateral trade and economic cooperation bring many benefits to Hungary, one major obstacle has remained: the lack of a direct flight.
Therefore, he welcomed the fact that all necessary agreements have now been signed, allowing Wizz Air to launch its direct Budapest–Mumbai flight later this year, operating daily.
“The world’s most populous country and one of the fastest-growing economies will soon be directly accessible from Hungary,” he stated.
“We are now also negotiating the possibility of a flight between New Delhi and Budapest. To achieve this, we need to amend our bilateral air services agreement. Today, we took the first step in that direction,” he added.
He emphasized that a non-stop connection will provide a significant boost to business, education, diplomatic, and tourism ties.
As previously reported, an unnamed airline submitted an application in April 2024 to the Transport Authority under the Ministry of Construction and Transport for operating passenger flights on the Budapest–Mumbai route.
Last June, József Váradi, CEO of the low-cost airline, stated that his company had received designation for direct Indian routes from Hungarian, Italian, and Austrian authorities, and flights could commence once approval from the Indian authorities is granted, utilizing the A321XLR aircraft set to arrive in the first quarter of 2025.
