When will have Henri Coandă Airport a new terminal? – CNAB has initiated a major infrastructure development project, launching a public tender for the design and technical assistance of a new terminal at Henri Coandă International Airport—Romania’s primary air gateway. The total estimated value of the contract is nearly EUR 40 million.
Described as the most ambitious and complex airport infrastructure project in Romania to date, the initiative aims to significantly expand the airport’s capacity and modernize its operations to meet the demands of future air traffic, projected up to the year 2040.
The tender invites bids for a comprehensive package of services including feasibility studies, conceptual design, technical documentation, and technical assistance throughout the execution phase. The deadline for bid submission is June 16.
The envisioned terminal will span approximately 176,000 square meters and is expected to accommodate up to 30 million passengers annually by 2040. During peak periods, the facility will be equipped to process up to 6,500 passengers per hour.
CNAB’s strategic vision for the new terminal includes creating a state-of-the-art, smart airport. The design will integrate advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), and intelligent building management systems (BMS). These systems aim to optimize passenger flow, enhance security protocols, and offer a high level of comfort and convenience, with ample spaces dedicated to retail, dining, and relaxation.
The terminal will adopt a modular design, allowing for phased development and flexible operational rollout. It will also meet top-tier standards for both Schengen and non-Schengen travel, featuring expansive arrival, departure, and transit areas.
Additional infrastructure planned as part of the project includes modern baggage handling systems, upgraded security check zones, and advanced passenger information systems. The wider development will also see the construction of new aircraft parking stands, boarding bridges, control towers, fire stations, administrative buildings, and wastewater treatment facilities.
To support increased access and ease of movement, the project will integrate new road networks—including underground links—connecting the current and future terminals. Passenger convenience will also be boosted with new parking areas, modern taxi and public transport hubs, and designated bus zones to alleviate congestion.
Looking ahead, CNAB’s strategic expansion program will further evolve to include a multimodal cargo platform and a high-tech industrial park aimed at bolstering aviation-related services and supporting economic growth around the airport.
